Grundies ready to snap back

WHEN clothing company Pacific Brands moved its manufacturing offshore, more than 2000 Australians lost their jobs. While Strathmore resident Tony Vass survived the job cuts, he lost faith with his employer and put his hand up for a redundancy package.

That was in early 2009. Just over 12 months later Mr Vass has launched his own underwear brand and is adamant that with a new approach and hard work, clothing manufacturing still has a place in Australia.

New Brief Encounters

Former Pacific Brands employee, Tony Vass, started his own Australian-made underwear business after watching local jobs being forfeited to China when the apparel giant switched its manufacturing abroad last year. "I witnessed the carnage firsthand as 3000 people lost their jobs to China,'' Vass says. ''I always wanted to run my own Aussie underwear brand so this was the motivation I needed."
